The Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district, known for its lively club scene and tourist hotspots, is a magnet for partygoers and visitors from all over the world. The area around Ostbahnhof is home to legendary clubs such as Berghain and the Eastside Gallery — places that for many embody Berlin’s exciting (night) life.
But for Miriam, this place is far more than just a tourist hub. When she fled from a violent partner with very little luggage, she ended up at Ostbahnhof — in a strange city, without people she knew or any knowledge of the language and with only what she had with her. Ostbahnhof and the surrounding streets became her new home. On her tour “Living in the Shadow of Berlin’s Nightlife”, Miriam talks about her life as a homeless female migrant and invites you to see familiar places from a different perspective.
Miriam takes us to the places where she used to sleep — in garages, underpasses, condemned buildings and tent settlements. She describes what safety means in unsafe places and what she has learned about the differences between sleeping places.
Miriam takes us to the clubs she has never been to, but in whose immediate vicinity she has lived and in whose shadows she has collected returnable bottles. She also shows alternative housing projects that have established themselves far away from luxury and capitalism and yet hardly find any space in Berlin.
