The tour starts in front of Essen Central Station (South), goes through the city center along Kettwiger Straße to Marktkirche and Kennedyplatz, and ends at Theaterplatz.

Urban design is much more than building streets and houses. It shapes how people move through the city, how public space is organized, and who even has access to it. Architecture can invite people to linger and meet, or it can deliberately prevent them from settling. Rarely is this left to chance.

On the city tour “No Place to Stay? Architecture in Public Space,” participants are invited to view Essen’s urban spaces from the perspective of people experiencing housing insecurity and homelessness. We highlight locations in the city center where urban planning either enables or restricts participation. The tour also encourages discussion about who the city is for: Does the city belong only to those who benefit from it economically, or to everyone who lives in it?
