Polina and her girlfriend only wanted to go on their first holiday together when Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine began. Stranded in Hungary, the young couple suddenly found themselves in a situation where everything was uncertain: What about our families? Can we return? Do we still want to live in Russia? For Polina, one thing became clear: “We have to go to Berlin, it’s the city where miracles happen.” What started as a holiday turned into the migration of a young queer Russian-Ukrainian couple from Moscow to Berlin.

In Berlin, Polina found new friends and organizations that helped them build a new life. On her tours through Prenzlauer Berg, she talks about the difficulties queer people face in Russia and the courage it takes to search for and create a new home.
