The tour starts in front of a Kreuzberg café, along the Maybachufer and Kottbusserdamm, past Hermannplatz and ends at the Refugio.

For Mahmoud, cafés have always been more than just places to drink coffee. In Syria, they were safe spaces for activism, resistance, and the fight for freedom. It was also in a café where he faced the danger and made his life-changing decision: to stay or to flee! This was the start of a one-way journey that led Mahmoud to Berlin, where cafés once again play a central role in his life—this time as spaces of refuge, belonging, and new beginnings. Once a meeting point for revolutionaries, a café is now part of his home, a place of community and resilience.

Walking through the streets of Kreuzkölln, Mahmoud retraces his journey—from the bustling markets of his childhood in Homs to Berlin-Neukölln. On his tour he also talks about the role of women in everyday life and revolution, personal moments of fear, loss, and uncertainty. He shares his experiences of exile, struggles with identity, and ultimately, the process of finding a new home. For Mahmoud, this journey does not end here: it is only the beginning of a new chapter.

If you would like to get to know Berlin better from Mahmoud’s point of view, here is a map of his favourite places and places with personal significance.
