What do Berlin’s water pumps have in common with a traditional Tunisian rainwater collection system, Mejel? Growing up in the Capital city of Tunisia, one of Seif’s childhood memories is of the Mejel in his grandmother’s kitchen. Today, this system is unfortunately gradually disappearing. On this tour, Seif links personal memories of his hometown, Tunis with places in Kreuzberg. Along the way, he explores climate justice, migration, and social movements.
His city walk takes place in Kreuzberg, the neighbourhood where Seif first settled after arriving in Berlin. He takes you to places such as Kottbusser Tor, the Turkish market at Maybach Ufer, Berlin’s historic water pumps and local community spaces. At each stop, he talks about connections between Berlin and Tunis, topics such as water, food security, environmental pollution, gentrification.
Seif believes that everything is connected. Together with you, he embarks on a journey that begins with the initial triggers of the Arab Spring; and its relationship with the climate crisis. He then shares personal examples from his own life: the threat of flooding to his father’s home, rising sea levels, and the increasing risk of heavy rainfall in the blue-and-white village of Sidi Bou Saïd, where he spent a lot of time as a young person. He also discusses the environmental pollution affecting many people in southern Tunisia and the displacement of people across the region.
Seif is concerned about the inequalities caused by the climate crisis. On this tour he invites us to think about the connections between climate justice, migration, and the right to the city.
